Employee Highlight: Akash Das

SpringML: What is your current position at SpringML?

Akash: I currently work as a Data Scientist in SpringML. As the name implies, this position requires me to handle a large amount of data and make them suitable to the requirements, analyze them using ML models or EDAs or other programmatic methods and finally put them into production.

During the past one and a half years, there has been a massive transition in my position. Previously the tasks or the problems that I was working on generally involved POCs, but the level of the projects has transitioned from POCs to Production levels.

SpringML: What’s the first thing you do when you come into work and last to wrap up the workday?

Akash: My day starts with grabbing a glass of espresso/black coffee. While drinking the coffee, I generally take a stroll in the office and try to have a chat with everyone. Then I start opening up the task tracker, which is typically a pivotal tracker or asana to see what all tasks are pending from my side. My day ends with a standup with my team members and the client team members.

SpringML: Before joining SpringML, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?

Akash: It is my first stint in the professional world as a full-time employee, but I do have some internship experiences and volunteer experiences, which I can deem as exciting. One of my volunteer experiences comprised of being the Network /System Admin in my bachelor’s. That was daunting, or you can say quite out of the box role for me being just a starter in the Computer Science field. In addition to that, the role demanded me to handle the network structure of our college campus. As a result, sometimes, I tend to be the go-to guys for my friends and classmates to make the internet speed faster or allow them an extended download limit than allowed hence putting me in some uncomfortable situations :P.

SpringML: If you could choose anyone, who would you pick as your mentor?

Akash: This puts me in a dilemma here. I believe in the saying that no one is perfect; hence, I generally tend to see the right traits in some of the great personalities, and if you could make a person out of those traits, then he/she will be my mentor. Some of the great characters that I look towards are Elon Musk, Barack Obama, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Guru Gaur Gopal Das, and Bob Marley.

SpringML: What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Akash:  There has been much good advice given by my parents, siblings. But there has been one which I generally try to follow which was given by my father:- “If you want to achieve anything in life, be it something small or great. You first need to be disciplined and responsible for the task that you are doing.”

What are 3 words to describe SpringML?

Akash: Challenging,  Fun, Fast-Paced

SpringML: Best vacation you’ve been to?

Akash: Ahh!! That’s something I would love to share. Every college student in India has a dream that they have to visit Goa (a Beach destination) once in their college years, but only a few plans make it to the end. Going to Goa with my friends and that too on a crunch budget makes it my best vacation ever. The two unforgettable sleepless nights, roaming on the roads and getting to know the boozing experience for the first time in our lives, gave us a lot of memories to carry on forward.

What’s the most recent app you’ve downloaded but are yet to use?

Akash: I installed an app called sharekhan last month. However, I didn’t get a chance to use it. Even today, the customer care executives call & bug me daily to start investing 😀

What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?

Akash: I like to play any sports be it indoor or outdoor; any other activity can’t match the joy and freshness that I feel. Even during the office hours, whenever I find the time, I sneak out and play table tennis matches at a stretch. Apart from that, I sometimes like to go for treks with my friends. Sometimes I even go for bike tours and rides, which allows me to explore some nearby places and gives me the joy of riding in a long empty stretch of road all alone, which sometimes makes me feel like I am in the  “World after the apocalypse.”

How do you find a work/life balance?

Akash: This sometimes puts me in a predicament. Many a time, I try to deduce the definition of work and life concerning my life, but I always fail. To draw a line between these two often gets tricky for me. So, whenever someone asks this, my answer is still like “my work is my life” too cheesy, huh… but yeah, that’s the truth as of now for my case. Hence, for me finding work-life balance becomes somewhat more natural as it always comes as a package with my way of life.
